The Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant is responsible for supporting the Responsible Pharmacist in delivering safe, accurate, and patient-centred pharmaceutical services within a retail (community) pharmacy environment. The role ensures compliance with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) regulations, Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP), and all applicable legislation governing the dispensing and sale of medicines.
The incumbent will contribute to operational efficiency, stock control, regulatory compliance, and exceptional customer service while maintaining the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Responsible Pharmacist with the accurate dispensing of prescriptions in accordance with SAPC regulations and Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP).
- Prepare, label, and package medication under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist.
- Capture and process prescriptions accurately on the dispensing system.
- Verify patient information, medical aid details, and prescription validity before processing.
- Assist with the management of Schedule 0–5 medicines in accordance with applicable legislation.
- Ensure that Schedule 6 medicines are referred directly to the Pharmacist for dispensing.
- Monitor and control expiry dates, implement FIFO (First-In-First-Out) principles, and report short-dated stock timeously.
- Conduct regular stock counts and assist with cycle counts and full stock takes.
- Maintain minimum and maximum stock levels in line with pharmacy procedures.
- Receive, check, and record incoming stock against invoices and delivery notes.
- Report stock discrepancies, damages, and near-expiry items to the Pharmacist immediately.
- Assist with merchandising and ensure that products are displayed in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Maintain proper storage conditions for medicines, including temperature monitoring and recording.
- Ensure the dispensary and pharmacy areas are clean, hygienic, and compliant with infection control standards.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service, including handling queries and directing patients appropriately.
- Assist with medical aid claims processing and follow-ups on rejected claims.
- Maintain accurate record-keeping and filing of prescriptions and related documentation.
- Adhere strictly to confidentiality and ethical standards relating to patient information.
- Comply with all pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in continuous professional development (CPD) as required by SAPC.
- Support loss prevention initiatives and report any irregularities or risks identified.
Requirements and skills
- Qualified Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant
- Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
- In possession of all other applicable and valid regulatory registrations
- 3–5 years’ experience in a retail (community) pharmacy environment
- Sound knowledge of dispensing support functions and retail pharmacy operations
