Role Purpose
Our client, a well-established institution based in Bryanston, Johannesburg, is seeking a Risk and Compliance Officer to support the identification, assessment, and management of risk and compliance matters across the organisation. The successful candidate will play a key role in embedding a strong risk and compliance culture, supporting fraud risk management, and contributing to business continuity management practices.
Key Responsibilities
1. Implement Risk Management Practices
- Identify and assess risks within the company environment in collaboration with Management.
- Provide recommendations into the risk management action plan.
- Implement the risk awareness plan, as agreed by Management.
- Assist in reviewing risk strategies, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives.
- Maintain and compile a risk register to inform risk management decisions.
- Verify management action plans and follow up on outstanding management actions.
- Identify gaps in policies and procedures and recommend mechanisms to address them.
- Monitor the effectiveness of the Risk Committee and risk champions.
- Update the operational risk control matrix on a quarterly basis.
- Compile risk and control reports quarterly, providing accurate information by the due date.
- Compile the enterprise risk scorecard report based on information gathered.
- Implement the enterprise risk scorecard, following up with relevant stakeholders to achieve stipulated objectives.
- Undertake risk assessments to determine the organisation’s current risk exposure.
- Conduct training and risk awareness sessions for employees on risk management tools and techniques.
- Provide risk assurance on business processes.
- Monitor compliance with the organisation’s enterprise-wide risk management policy, following up appropriately on issues identified.
- Follow up with respective Unit Heads to ensure each department’s strategy incorporates risk management principles.
- Ensure incident management procedures are in place and risks are mitigated.
2. Provide Assurance on the Organisation’s Level of Risk Compliance
- Incorporate compliance awareness into the organisational culture.
- Assist with the design and implementation of a formal compliance programme, including frameworks, policies and procedures, formal monitoring, and regulatory/legislative compliance reporting.
- Provide assurance on the organisation’s level of compliance with operational and regulatory/legislative requirements.
- Serve on various governance structures and facilitate the resolution of non-compliance incidents.
3. Foster a Risk and Compliance Awareness Culture
- Conduct risk and compliance awareness campaigns throughout the organisation.
- Co-facilitate awareness programmes with identified stakeholders.
- Provide guidance on strategic and business projects with regard to risk-related matters.
4. Provide Project Management Support
- Participate in projects or collaborative business initiatives, providing support on risk management activities.
- Provide support on strategic and business projects.
5. Implement Fraud Risk Management Practices
- Implement fraud prevention frameworks, policies and plans.
- Conduct preliminary investigations into suspicious activities.
- Provide assistance to investigative authorities in connection with fraud matters.
- Follow up on fraud cases and provide periodic progress reports to governance structures.
6. Establish and Implement Business Continuity Management (BCM) Practices
- Facilitate maintenance of the BCM programme (BCP strategy, planning and testing).
- Provide guidance to business units on business continuity management.
- Submit reports to various governance structures on the status of BCM for the organisation.
7. Assist with the Implementation of a Combined Assurance Model
- Establish partnerships with internal and external assurance providers to provide a coordinated approach to all assurance activities.
- Liaise with external and internal auditors, providing them with accurate information in a timely manner.
- Perform activities in line with the organisation’s risk management policy and combined assurance practices and procedures.
Requirements
Technical Requirements
- Knowledge of risk and compliance.
- Ability to use standard software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office) and to learn bespoke packages as required.
- Strong report writing skills.
- Sound understanding of governance, risk and controls.
- Understanding of industry trends.
- Relevant regulatory knowledge.
Minimum Education
- Relevant Bachelor’s Degree.
- Registered with a professional body (such as the Compliance Institute and/or the Institute of Risk Management).
- Professional body qualification/s advantageous.
Minimum Work Experience
- At least 5 years’ job-related experience.
