TEMP LEGAL TYPIST -Umhlanga (durban)
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Our Durban-based firm of Attorneys and Conveyancers is seeking a fluent, fast, and accurate Legal Typist to support our conveyancing and general legal practice. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing property transfer, bond, and general litigation documentation from dictation and precedents, working closely with attorneys, the conveyancing secretary, and support staff to ensure documents are accurate, correctly formatted, and turned around within tight transfer and registration deadlines.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Type and format conveyancing documents including deeds of transfer, bonds, cancellation and cession documents, offers to purchase, and sale agreements.
- Type general legal correspondence, contracts, affidavits, pleadings, and other attorney documentation from dictation.
- Prepare documents for lodgement at the Deeds Office, ensuring compliance with Deeds Office formatting and registration requirements.
- Transcribe digital dictation from attorneys and the conveyancer with speed and precision.
- Proofread and check documents for accuracy, correct legal terminology, and consistency of names, property descriptions, and figures.
- Liaise with the conveyancing secretary regarding document status, corrections, and outstanding requirements.
- Manage document version control, diarise deadlines, and maintain accurate electronic and paper filing systems.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client, property, and financial information in line with POPIA.
- Meet tight, transaction-driven deadlines, including same-day and urgent turnarounds.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Fluent typist — excellent written and spoken English essential.
- Matric / Grade 12 certificate; a legal secretarial qualification is advantageous.
- Previous experience as a legal typist within a conveyancing or attorneys’ practice strongly preferred.
- Fast and accurate typing speed (minimum 60–80 words per minute).
- Working knowledge of conveyancing terminology, documentation, and Deeds Office requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word; experience with conveyancing software (e.g. GhostConvey, StorLink, LexisConvey) advantageous.
- Excellent attention to detail, particularly with names, figures, and property descriptions.
- Ability to work accurately under pressure and manage multiple files simultaneously.
- High level of discretion and professionalism in handling confidential client and financial information.
