South Africa’s Youth and the Labour Market in 2026: Challenges, Opportunities and Reasons for Optimism

South Africa’s latest Youth and Labour Market statistics for the first quarter of 2026 paint a picture that is both challenging and encouraging.

Young people continue to make up almost half of the country’s working-age population. Of the 42.2 million South Africans aged between 15 and 64, approximately 21 million are between the ages of 15 and 34. This represents an enormous pool of talent, energy and potential that will shape the future of our economy.

However, the data also highlights the challenges many young people face when trying to enter and progress within the labour market.

According to the latest figures, 5.6 million young people are currently employed, while 4.7 million are unemployed and a further 10.6 million are outside the labour force altogether. Unemployment remains particularly high among those aged 15-24, where more than six in ten young people seeking work are unable to find employment.

At first glance, these figures may appear discouraging. However, they also tell another story.

Employers Are Still Hiring

One of the most important insights from the report is that millions of young South Africans are successfully entering the workforce each year. In fact, young people account for a significant proportion of employees across many sectors of the economy.

Trade remains the largest employer of young people, accounting for almost a quarter of all youth employment. Community and social services, finance and business services also continue to create opportunities for younger workers.

For employers, this reinforces the importance of investing in emerging talent. Today’s entry-level employee may well become tomorrow’s supervisor, manager or industry leader.

The Skills Gap Remains a Challenge

One of the realities facing many employers is that while unemployment remains high, finding candidates with the right skills, experience and workplace readiness can still be difficult.

Many organisations report shortages in technical skills, digital capabilities, communication skills and industry-specific experience. This creates a disconnect where vacancies exist, but suitable candidates can be difficult to identify.

For job seekers, this presents an important lesson. Qualifications remain valuable, but employers are increasingly looking for a combination of education, practical experience, adaptability and strong interpersonal skills.

Candidates who invest in continuous learning, develop digital skills and actively build workplace experience often place themselves in a stronger position when opportunities arise.

Young Women Face Additional Barriers

The report also highlights a growing concern around the number of young women who are not in employment, education or training.

In 2026, nearly four in ten young women aged 15-24 fell into this category, a figure that continues to rise. Addressing these barriers is critical, not only for individuals but for the wider South African economy.

Businesses that invest in inclusive recruitment practices, mentorship and development programmes have an important role to play in creating pathways into meaningful employment.

Reasons for Optimism

Despite the challenges, there are many reasons to remain positive.

South Africa continues to produce talented graduates, skilled professionals and ambitious young people eager to contribute. New industries are emerging, technology is creating opportunities that did not exist a decade ago, and employers increasingly recognise the value of investing in future talent.

For job seekers, every application, interview and networking opportunity is a step towards building a successful career.

For employers, there has never been a more important time to engage with, develop and retain young talent.
