Mastering Online Interviews—Tools, Etiquette, and Best Practices

Online interviews are here to stay—here’s how to impress from behind the screen.

Remember, interviews are a two way process, it is as much an opportunity for a potential employer to get to know you as it is an opportunity for you to get to know them. A job interview has the potential to lead to very significant changes in your life so take it seriously, do your home work and be prepared.

1. Prepare Your Tech

  • Test your internet connection, camera, and microphone beforehand.
  • Have a backup plan (like a mobile hotspot) in case of technical issues.

2. Set the Scene

  • Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background.
  • Some software allows you to blur your background or replace it with a more appropriate image.
  • Dress professionally—just as you would for an in-person interview.

3. Practice Good Etiquette

  • Log in 5–10 minutes early.
  • Make eye contact by looking at the camera, not the screen.
  • Listen carefully and avoid interrupting.

4. Be Ready for Common Questions

  • Practice answering typical interview questions out loud.
  • Prepare questions to ask the interviewer about the company and role.

5. Follow Up

  • Send a thank-you email after the interview, reiterating your interest and key strengths.
