How to Network Strategically on LinkedIn

How to Network Strategically on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is often described as an online CV, but used properly, it’s much more than that. It’s a living, breathing professional network — and one of the most powerful tools available to job seekers at every stage of their career.

The first step is making sure your profile is complete and searchable. Recruiters and employers use LinkedIn’s search function every day, so your job titles, skills, experience and summary all matter. A clear headline, a professional photo and a concise summary of what you do (and what you’re looking for) can dramatically increase the chances of you appearing in searches. You must have a complete profile otherwise LinkedIn is unlikely to give your profile in a search result. This means every sestion needs good quality information. You should get at least three genuine references and give references in return.

Once your profile is in good shape, engagement matters. Join relevant industry groups, follow companies you admire and take part in discussions. You don’t need to post constantly, but thoughtful comments on other people’s content help build visibility and credibility. Writing your own content — even short posts sharing insights or experiences — can also position you as someone engaged and informed in your field.

Networking isn’t just about collecting contacts. It’s about relationships. Reach out to people in a genuine way, whether it’s to ask a question, share an article or congratulate them on a role change. And where possible, move conversations into the real world — a call, a coffee or a short meeting can turn an online interaction into a meaningful connection.

Finally, remember that networking works best when it’s not just about you. Offer help, make introductions and share opportunities when you can. The strongest networks are built on mutual support, not one-way requests.
